Protecting the UK’s critical national infrastructure

The UK’s critical national infrastructure (CNI) consists of the most important systems in the country – responsible for keeping the economy functioning and supplying services to homes and businesses.

Recent changes in the geopolitical environment, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the rise of state-aligned groups around the globe and an increase in aggressive cyber activity, means the threat status for the UK’s CNI has heightened.

Phishing attacks: Defending your legal organisation

Phishing affects everyone but the Legal Sector is more attractive for cyber criminals due to the nature of the business, indeed the 32nd annual PwC Annual Law Firms’ Survey 2023 revealed that 85 per cent of the UK’s Top 100 firms are extremely, or somewhat, concerned about cyber threats.

Reputation is critical to the business of law, which makes legal practices attractive targets for extortion. The Legal Sector is additionally more vulnerable because of the amount of highly sensitive information businesses carry, as well as the large volumes of money they can be dealing with. This makes organisations in the sector especially targeted by phishing attacks.

What is Phishing?

One of the easiest ways attackers can access your system is through the use of phishing scams and it’s something you need to monitor.

Essentially, phishing is when attackers attempt to trick users into “doing the wrong thing”.

This can take the form of encouraging them to click a “bad link” that downloads malware to their device, or by directing them to a dodgy website, or through trying to gain information for later scams or fraudulent attacks.

Steps to take for Cyber Security Protection

Cyber security protection needn’t be a daunting challenge for any business but it’s certainly one all should be getting to grips with.

The recent exposure of vulnerabilities at the BBC, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Boots the Chemist, and others demonstrated that even the largest organisations can still become victims of cyber crime.

The rise in cyber attacks could make them uninsurable according to the head of one of Europe’s biggest insurance companies Zurich.

Mario Greco, CEO at the Swiss-based company, told the Financial Times that cyber attacks, rather than natural disasters, would become uninsurable if the disruption from hacks continues to rise.

Malicious bots can damage your company reputation

Bots can cause multiple types of damage to your brand’s website and – by extension – your company reputation.

Misinformation is one of the many ways bots cause issues worldwide and, while you may think your brand is safe from that type of attack, the technology used to create bots which spread false data can also be used to cripple legitimate businesses.
