What to look out for at Leeds Digital Festival 2020

It’s been a funny old year but one thing that’s still going full steam ahead – if later than normal – is the quite excellent Leeds Digital Festival 2020.

The 2020 Virtual Festival earlier this year welcomed 15,000 attendees across 134 events, from more than 50 countries and six continents. 

Running from September 21st for two weeks, Leeds Digital Festival 2020 is a record-breaker which will see 294 events being hosted across the city both physically and virtually.

Big Data discussions

Helping to kick off Leeds Digital Festival 2020 is The Data Shed’s Does Big Data = Big Costs? which is being held online on Monday, September 28th from 12-1pm via Zoom. 
This talk by The Data Shed’s CTO Ed Thewlis, and Chief Engineer Andy Thurgood, shares the journey the company’s been on, with a focus on some of the lessons learnt & trade-offs they have encountered, as well as battle scars acquired.

Inspiring the younger generation is the Code Club’s Light Night Challenge. This event runs for the duration of Leeds Digital Festival 2020 and beyond, starting on September 15th and ending on October 13th.

In 2019, for Light Night Code Club members created a Micro:bit installation with Code Clubs across the city. This year they’re asking attendees to hack the code to create your own light show. Online places are limited to 30 and the event is suitable for ages seven to 12 so grab a place.

Ethics in design

A Better World By Design – Join Will Saunders, founder of ethical design agency Good Will Studios, at this Leeds Digital Festival masterclass in brand strategy for social good on Monday, September 21st from 1-1.30pm.

Join a panel of experts on Tuesday, September 29th for Leeds Digital Festival 2020: Smarter Branding Strategies For A COVID Business Era being run virtually from 12-1.30pm by experts in digital insight, brand creation, legal protection and digital deployment.

The future of Leeds?

Also on September 29th, from 2-3pm, join Leeds City Council and EY at the Digital Leeds – reframing the city’s future event as they bring together stakeholders from across Leeds to develop the Digital Leeds Strategy and ask #BetterQuestions about the city’s future vision.

The output from this event will be used to inform the development of a city wide Digital Strategy informing future plans and priorities.  The session will be led by Eve Roodhouse – Chief Economic Officer – Leeds City Council. Secure your place here.

Celebrating women in tech

Netpremacy is teaming up with some innovative speakers from around the country to celebrate Women in Technology. This includes speakers from Google Cloud, Netpremacy WILD, and more and takes place 11-12pm on Wednesday, September 30th online, with places limited to 250

Speakers include Fraja Hodges, Netpremacy – Dipping your toes into tech; Daisie-Marie Twist – A look into the support desks at Netpremacy; Sarah Tulip – WILD & my Tech journey; Jordan Winokur, Google- A journey to success in the cloud. There will also be a live Q & A with the panel.
